WhatsApp comes back online after global service outage

Many people took to social media this morning to complain that they were unable to send or receive messages on the platform.

LAST UPDATE | 25 Oct 2022

INTERNET MESSAGING SERVICE WhatsApp has come back online for many users after a service outage knocked the popular messaging app offline for around two hours on Tuesday morning.

The Meta-owned platform has not yet confirmed the cause of the fault but had told users earlier that it was working to fix it.

Many took to social media this morning to complain that they were unable to send or receive messages on the platform.

After opening the app, users found that while they could still access their conversations, the app was failing to deliver new messages, or send any that they attempted to send.

A persistent message was showing for many users at the top of the app, saying it is “connecting” to the server, but then appears to fail to do so, leaving users unable to send or receive any messages.

According to the service status website Downdetector, users began reporting issues with WhatsApp at just before 8am on this morning, with more than 12,000 reports of issues reported to the website by 8.30am.

The outage inspired some tongue-in-cheek comments on social media.

WhatsApp is one of the most popular messaging platforms in Ireland and around the world and is estimated to have more than two billion active users globally.

The messaging platform apologised to users for the outage.

“We know people had trouble sending messages on WhatsApp today,” a spokesperson for the platform said.

“We’ve fixed the issue and apologise for any inconvenience.”
